How to choose
- For Class II cavities, the manufacturers indicate Palodent V3 sectional matrices and Adapt SuperCap circumferential matrices. Stainless steel sectional matrices are held with a ring, and contoured saddle matrices with a spring.
- Pro-Matrix and Omni-Matrix have an integrated retainer, so no placement instruments are needed; the band is tightened with its own knob or handle.
- According to the product sheets, Ivory, Pony and Mylar bands and matrices with an integrated retainer are single-use. The Tofflemire and Ivory retainers are stainless steel, and the single ring for saddle matrices is autoclavable; for contoured metal matrices, the product sheet states whether they can be sterilized.
- Wedges hold the matrix at the cervical margin. Palodent V3 anatomical wedges, in small, medium and large (100 pcs), have wings that compress on insertion and then expand, and a hollow section that allows a second wedge from the opposite side. Wooden wedges, Poly wedges with a ring and elastic silicone wedges are under wedges.
The Small clamp helps place the rings. Frequently asked questions
Which matrices are for Class II cavities?
The manufacturers indicate Palodent V3 sectional matrices and Adapt SuperCap circumferential matrices for Class II. Pro-Matrix, with an integrated retainer, is used for MO, OD and MOD restorations according to its description.
How thick are the matrices?
Between 0.030 mm (Adapt SuperCap) and 0.050 mm. Sectional and contoured matrices are 35–50 µm, Omni-Matrix is 0.038 mm, and Ivory and Pony bands are 0.05 mm.
What do I need for saddle matrices?
A ring or spring to hold them on the tooth. There is a single autoclavable stainless steel ring, the Small clamp for placing rings, and saddle matrix sets that include the spring and forceps.
Which wedges go with the matrices?
Palodent V3 anatomical wedges in small, medium and large, 100 each. Wooden, plastic ring and silicone wedges are in the Wedges category.
