Syringe Needles
Sterile single-use hypodermic needles for syringes and infusion sets, from 18G (1.2 mm, pink hub) to 30G (0.3 mm, yellow hub), in boxes of 100. The hub colour shows the needle size. This category also has long 20G × 70 mm Sterican needles, 29G × 12 mm pen needles for insulin pens and an electric needle destroyer. Below are all the products (14), with prices from 12.09 lei.

Sizes and colours
The colour code for single-use hypodermic needles is set by ISO 6009: each diameter is assigned a hub colour, the hub being the plastic part that holds the cannula. The higher the G (gauge) number, the thinner the needle. Sizes in this category:
| Size | Hub colour | Outer diameter |
|---|---|---|
| 18G | pink | 1.2 mm |
| 19G | cream | 1.1 mm |
| 20G | yellow | 0.9 mm |
| 21G | green | 0.8 mm |
| 22G | black | 0.7 mm |
| 23G | blue | 0.6 mm |
| 24G | purple | 0.55 mm |
| 25G | orange | 0.5 mm |
| 26G | brown | 0.45 mm |
| 27G | grey | 0.4 mm |
| 30G | yellow | 0.3 mm |
Needle lengths in this category are 38 mm (1½″) for 18G–21G, 32 mm (1¼″) for 23G, 25 mm (1″) for 24G, 19 mm (¾″) for 25G, 16 mm (⅝″) for 26G and 13 mm (½″) for 27G and 30G. Labels give the dimensions as diameter × length, for example 0.80 × 38 mm.
Other needles and accessories
- Sterican 20G × 70 mm needles (0.9 × 70 mm), 100 per box, for when a long needle is needed.
- RAYS 29G × 12 mm pen needles, stainless steel, 100 per box, for insulin pens. ISO 6009 does not apply to pen needles, and their colour (red for 29G × 12 mm) follows the manufacturer’s own code.
- Needle destroyer: an electric unit measuring 22 × 14 × 9 cm that melts needles at 1000 °C. The residue collects in a tray at the base, and the carbon is replaced every 4,000 needles, according to the product sheet.
How to choose a needle
- Size: follow your practice protocol or the medicine’s instructions, then check the needle by its colour. 20G and 30G share the same colour, so for these also read the diameter on the label.
- Length: the same gauge can come in different lengths, such as the 20G × 38 mm needle and the 20G × 70 mm Sterican needle, so compare both dimensions.
- Construction: each needle is sterile and single-use, with a cannula, hub and protective cap made of stainless steel and polypropylene.
- Syringe: the needles are used with syringes and infusion sets. Syringes without a needle are under Luer Slip syringes, and threaded-tip syringes under Luer Lock syringes.
After use
Used needles are collected in rigid plastic containers with a special lid and a permanent closure; for infectious waste the container is yellow and carries the “Biological hazard” pictogram (technical norms approved by Romanian Ministry of Health Order no. 1226/2012). Containers from 0.4 to 12 litres are under plastic waste containers. For vacuum blood collection there are separate vacutainer needles in 18G, 21G and 22G, and a general guide is available in the article on medical syringes and needles.
For needle gauge and hub colors, and how they differ from IV cannulas and butterflies, read the guide Glossary of sizes and color codes for medical consumables.
Frequently asked questions
What colour is each syringe needle size?
18G pink, 19G cream, 20G yellow, 21G green, 22G black, 23G blue, 24G purple, 25G orange, 26G brown, 27G grey and 30G yellow. Because 20G and 30G share a colour, also check the diameter on the label: 0.9 mm and 0.3 mm respectively.
What do 0.80 × 38 mm or 1½″ on the box mean?
The first value is the outer diameter of the needle and the second is its length. Length is sometimes given in inches: ½″ = 13 mm, ⅝″ = 16 mm, ¾″ = 19 mm, 1″ = 25 mm, 1¼″ = 32 mm, 1½″ = 38 mm.
Can pen needles be used on a syringe?
No. Pen needles fit insulin pens. This category has RAYS 29G × 12 mm pen needles, 100 per box, which the manufacturer describes as compatible with universal insulin pens.
How many needles are in a box?
Hypodermic needles and pen needles come 100 per box. The needle destroyer is sold individually.
Where do used needles go?
Into rigid plastic sharps containers with temporary and permanent closure. For infectious waste the container is yellow and marked with the “Biological hazard” pictogram (Romanian Ministry of Health Order no. 1226/2012, art. 17–18).
