Medical mask types: I, II and IIR
The harmonised European standard EN 14683:2019+AC:2019 divides medical face masks into Type I and Type II according to bacterial filtration efficiency. Type II is further divided into II and IIR according to splash resistance: the letter R stands for splash resistance. According to the European Commission guidance on medical face masks, Type I masks are for patients and other persons and are not intended for healthcare staff in an operating room or in settings with similar requirements.

How to choose
The mask type is chosen according to your facility’s protocol. Both adult surgical masks in this category are Type IIR: PRIMA, in 9 colours, and Abena, blue, with a declared fluid resistance of 120 mmHg. For children there is the 3-pleat mask in pink, blue or white; it and the Abena mask are marked latex-free. The product sheet of the clear plastic mask gives no EN 14683 classification.
Medical mask or FFP respirator
A medical face mask is a medical device: it covers the nose and mouth and limits the transmission of infective agents between staff and patient. Filtering face-piece (FFP) respirators are personal protective equipment that protects the wearer and falls under Regulation (EU) 2016/425. This category has no FFP respirators.
Oxygen masks, with a nebuliser or reservoir bag, are under oxygen therapy, face shields and goggles under safety glasses and face shields, and caps, gowns and shoe covers under disposable nonwoven products.
For the difference between Type I, II and IIR medical masks and FFP2 and FFP3 respirators, read the guide Medical masks or FFP respirators: differences and when to use each.
