Product details
The Schirmer test contains Schirmer ophthalmic strips for measuring tear production, graduated strips in individual sterile packaging.
These are diagnostic tests made of Whatman No. 41 filter paper with millimeter graduations, individually packed sterile.
Schirmer tests are diagnostic tests used in ophthalmology to quantitatively determine:
-total tear production (basal secretion plus reflex secretion);
-basal secretion (after topical anesthesia of the conjunctival sac).
Instructions for use:
1.1. For the Schirmer I test (measures total secretion, without anesthesia), do not apply topical medication or manipulate the eye before the test.
1.2. For the Schirmer II test (measures only basal secretion, with anesthesia), instill local anesthetic twice, wait 2-3 minutes, then, with the eye closed, wipe the lash line and the surrounding skin, particularly the temporal area, where the strip will be placed.
2. Position the patient in the examination chair, with the head resting against the headrest. Dim the lights.
3. Fold the envelope along the zero graduation line of the Schirmer strip.
4. Peel apart the 2 sheets of the envelope, which releases the strip with its rounded end folded at graduation 0. (Hold the edges of the envelope between your thumb and index finger, pull carefully to expose the strip inside, and remove the strip by holding its square end.)
5. With the patient looking up at the ceiling, pull down the lower eyelid and place the folded rounded end of the strip in the conjunctival sac, toward the outer corner of the eye, with the graduations facing up. The eye is kept closed during the test.
6. Wait 5 minutes, remove the strip and measure the length of the wet area.
7. Interpreting the results: Schirmer I: 15-25 mm normal total secretion 10-15 mm early condition 6-10 mm intermediate condition 2-5mmm severe condition Below 2 mm near-total dryness Schirmer II: 15 mm: normal secretion 10-15 mm mild condition 6-10 mm moderate condition 1-5 mm severe condition Below 2 mm: near-total dryness IMPORTANT: This product is for external use only and must be used only by qualified personnel.
