How to read the result
| Product | What it shows, according to its sheet |
|---|---|
| Ethylene oxide tape, 19 mm × 50 m | the stripes turn from red to yellow |
| Dry heat tape, 19 mm × 50 m | from green to dark brown |
| Steam labels, 29 × 28 mm | from pink to brown |
| Plasma labels, 29 × 28 mm | from pink to yellow |
| Bowie-Dick test | the ink turns from blue to dark green or black; if it stays blue, the steam did not fully penetrate |
| Class 5 strip, 70 × 20 mm | three windows, PROCESS, CORRECT and EXTENDED; at 135 °C for 7 minutes or 121 °C for 20 minutes, CORRECT turns black |
| Class 5 self-adhesive integrator | three pink squares: all three black means an optimal result, only one means an invalid result |
| Bionova BT20 biological indicator | after incubation: purple, effective sterilization; yellow, failure |
Traceability labels
The double-adhesive labels are applied with a labeling gun and have three lines of 11 characters each: the first has fields for the product code, sterilizer number, operator and batch, the second is for the sterilization date and the third for the expiry date. One layer stays on the pack and the other goes into the patient's records.
Frequently asked questions
How is steam indicator tape used?
According to its sheet, cut a 4–5 cm piece with at least three lines for every cycle and stick it on sterilization drums, instrument boxes and inside the sterilizer. The tape shows that the pack went through a cycle; it does not replace the indicators placed inside the pack.
What does the Helix test check?
Steam penetration in the sterilizer: an indicator strip goes into the device's silicone tube, and after the cycle its color shows whether the steam reached it. Before sterilization, the air must be removed from the chamber.
