Sutures and Surgical Instruments for Veterinary Use
For spays, castrations and wound closure, the veterinary practice needs suture material and the instruments to place it. Sutures with a needle are 70 to 90 cm long, most of them 75 cm, and many come 12 per box. The PGA thread is violet and, according to the product sheets, braided and coated with polycaprolactone and calcium stearate. The 25 m spool from SMI is intended for veterinary use and is cut to the length you need.
Absorbable or non-absorbable
Polyglycolic acid is an absorbable material and silk a non-absorbable one. SMI silk sutures come without a needle, 150 cm long, in sizes 3/0, 2/0, 0, 1 and 2. You will find them separately under absorbable sutures and non-absorbable sutures. The choice of suture for a procedure remains the veterinarian's decision.
Suturing instruments
Needle holders include Mathieu (14 cm, curved or straight), Mayo-Hegar (straight, 18 cm), Olsen-Hegar (12.5, 14 or 16.5 cm) and Castroviejo (curved, 14 or 18 cm). For tissue and vessels there are Adson (15.5 cm), Halstead Mosquito (12 cm, straight or curved), Kocher (14 or 16 cm) and Pean (18.5 cm) forceps, and for cutting, Iris (12 cm), Castroviejo (14 cm) and Littauer suture scissors (9.5 cm) and 14–14.5 cm surgical scissors, plus no. 3 and no. 4 scalpel handles. For skin closure there are also a sterile skin stapler with 35 staples and a sterile surgical skin marker with a ruler, while polypropylene surgical meshes, described for hernias and incisional hernias, range from 6 × 11 to 30 × 30 cm. All of them are under needles, thread and surgical instruments.

How does a Tapercut needle differ from a round needle?
A round needle has a tapered point that spreads tissue without cutting it. A Tapercut needle also has a round body, but its point is cutting.

There are four sizes, all sterile and made of polypropylene: 6 × 11 and 7.6 × 15 cm, also sold in packs of 6, plus 15 × 15 and 30 × 30 cm, sold individually.
