You buy the dental unit, the compressor and the autoclave once. You buy consumables every month, and without them the practice cannot see even its first patient: gloves, masks, bibs, saliva ejectors, cotton rolls, sterilization pouches, waste containers. The list below groups them by the moment you use them, from the patient's chair to the waste container, and starts from the pack sizes in the catalog. Quantities are a guide only: they depend on how many patients you see per day and on the procedures you perform.
In short
- Split the list in three: what you use for every patient, what you use per procedure, and what belongs to sterilization, disinfection and waste.
- Gloves, masks, bibs, saliva ejectors and cotton rolls run out first, so always keep a reserve of them.
- Critical instruments are sterilized: high-level disinfection does not replace sterilization, and in healthcare units dry-heat sterilizers are allowed only in microbiology laboratories.
- Used needles and blades go into yellow rigid plastic containers placed close to every workstation.
- Some products are ordered by size or shade: gloves, anesthesia needles, micro-applicators, rubber dam clamps, impression trays, matrices, points, composite.
Check the licensing requirements for the practice with the county public health directorate and the Romanian College of Dentists. This list does not replace them. It helps you avoid forgetting any consumable in your first order and shows you what to restock afterwards.

What the rules say, in short
- High-level disinfection cannot replace sterilization, and critical instruments, which penetrate tissue, are sterilized (the technical norms approved by Romanian Ministry of Health Order 1761/2021).
- In healthcare units, dry-heat sterilization in a dry-heat oven is allowed only in microbiology laboratories. Autoclave classes, pouches, indicators and how long an instrument stays sterile are explained in the guide to sterilization.
- Yellow marks hazardous medical waste, and infectious sharps are collected in yellow containers made of rigid plastic resistant to mechanical action (Romanian Order 1226/2012, art. 14 and art. 17).
- Infectious waste may stay in the unit for no more than 48 hours, or no more than 7 days in a refrigerated space below 4 °C (art. 34). Labeling and storage are covered in the guide to medical waste in the practice.
The order of steps between two patients is in the surface disinfection guide, and the difference between a disinfectant and an antiseptic in the guide Disinfectant or antiseptic?. The Isorapid spray in the catalog is ready to use, for medical device surfaces, dental units and trays, and the 150 ml OROLIN Burbath tank, with a strainer, is made for immersing burs and files.

How much to order the first time
- Count your patientsFor example, 12 patients a day over 20 working days means 240 patients a month: 240 bibs, that is 3 rolls of 80, and as many dental unit cover kits.
- Multiply by what each patient usesGloves are changed for every patient, and long procedures often use more than one pair. A box of 100 gloves holds 50 pairs.
- Add a reserveDelivery takes 1–2 working days, and orders placed by 2:00 p.m. usually ship the same day. Reorder when you open the last box, not after it runs out.
- Check expiry dates on arrivalWith sterile products, use first whatever expires first.
- Review the list after the first monthCompare your estimate with actual use and adjust the quantities.
Common mistakes
- Ordering a single glove sizeA glove that is too small or too large tires the hand and tears more easily. Order your team's sizes from the start.
- Placing the sharps container far from the dental unitNeedles and blades are discarded right after use, without carrying them across the room.
- Buying pouches for a different sterilization methodAutoclave pouches and nylon pouches for dry-heat sterilizers are not interchangeable. Order the pouches that match your device.
- Using a single-use product twiceThe KIT 1 examination kit, trays, saliva ejectors and covers are made for one patient.
- Forgetting the small itemsCups, bib chains, dispensers and replacement visors are often missing from the first order.
What is not on this listEquipment (dental unit, compressor, autoclave, curing light), medicines and anesthetics. For emergencies there are
first aid kits for dental practices; the contents of your emergency kit follow the licensing requirements.

Frequently asked questions
What consumables do I need to open a dental practice?
Start with four groups used for every patient: team protection, patient and dental unit protection, isolation and suction, examination. Add the consumables for the procedures you perform and the sterilization, disinfection and waste group. Check the licensing requirements with the county public health directorate and the Romanian College of Dentists.
How many gloves should I order for the first month?
Calculate from the number of patients: gloves are changed for every patient, and long procedures often use more than one pair. A box of 100 gloves holds 50 pairs. Order the sizes of every team member from the start.
Can I sterilize instruments in a dry-heat sterilizer in a dental practice?
The technical norms approved by Romanian Ministry of Health Order 1761/2021 allow dry-heat sterilization in healthcare units only in microbiology laboratories. Critical instruments are sterilized, and high-level disinfection cannot replace sterilization.
What do I collect used needles and blades in?
In yellow containers made of rigid plastic resistant to mechanical action, as the norms approved by Romanian Order 1226/2012 require for infectious sharps. The catalog has containers from 1 to 12 liters; place one next to every dental unit.
Which dental consumables are ordered by size?
Gloves, atraumatic anesthesia needles (XS, S, M), micro-applicators (S, M, L), rubber dam clamps, impression trays (S, M, L), Ivory matrices (28 or 35 mm) and gutta-percha points (sizes 15–40). The i-FLOW flowable composite is chosen by shade: A1, A2, A3.
How quickly does a restocking order arrive?
Delivery takes 1–2 working days, and orders placed by 2:00 p.m. usually ship the same day. That is why you reorder when you open the last box, not after it runs out.
