In a family medicine practice, consumption is spread over dozens of small items: tongue depressors, otoscope specula, alcohol swabs, syringes, gauze swabs, blood collection tubes. None of them is expensive, but running out of any one of them stops a consultation. The list below groups them by the moment you use them and starts from the pack sizes in the catalog. Quantities are a guide only: they depend on your number of patients and on the services you offer.
In short
- Split the order into devices, which you buy once, and consumables, which you restock every month.
- Examinations use the most: tongue depressors, specula, gloves, couch roll, alcohol swabs.
- For blood collection you need tubes, a holder and needles from the same system; for urine, stool and throat samples, sterile containers and swabs.
- You set the contents of the emergency kit according to the licensing requirements; this list covers its consumables, not the medicines.
- Infectious waste may stay in the practice for no more than 48 hours, or no more than 7 days in a refrigerated space below 4 °C.
Check the licensing requirements for the practice with the county public health directorate and the Romanian College of Physicians. This list does not replace them. It helps you place a complete first order and know what to restock afterwards.

The devices you buy once
Devices are bought at opening and replaced rarely, but each one has its own consumables. Put them on the list from the start, so you don't discover at the first patient that you lack the right cuff or the paper for the electrocardiograph.
| Device | Examples in the catalog | What it needs |
| Blood pressure monitor | Manual upper-arm monitor with an adult cuff for 23–32 cm arms, 0–300 mmHg range, ±3 mmHg accuracy; Microlife BP B3 AFIB automatic monitor | Cuffs by size, for example the Microlife L-XL cuff for 32–52 cm arms |
| Thermometer | Digital, 32.0–42.9 °C, ±0.1 °C accuracy; infrared no-contact forehead thermometer Microlife NC 150 BT | Spare batteries |
| Pulse oximeter | Fingertip, adult or pediatric, with a color display | Its product sheet says it is for spot checks, not continuous monitoring |
| Stethoscope | Sprague-Rappaport with two diaphragms and three bells for adults and children; dual head stethoscope | Alcohol swabs for the ear tips, as the dual head stethoscope's sheet indicates |
| Glucometer | PRIMA BG-208, which uses about 1 µl of blood and gives a result in 5 seconds | Compatible test strips and lancets |
| Your otoscope | Disposable ear specula: 4 mm for adults, 2.5 mm for children | Check compatibility with your otoscope before ordering |
| Electrocardiograph | Paper by model, disposable electrodes, gel | The paper width and format are chosen by model |
How to choose a clinically validated blood pressure monitor and the right cuff is explained in the guide to blood pressure monitors and thermometers for the practice, and the right paper for your electrocardiograph in the guide to ECG paper. For blood glucose, see the guide to glucometers.

Examination
The sterile tongue depressors in the catalog are individually sealed and described for oral examination; the non-sterile ones, not individually wrapped, are also used as applicators. The ear specula, 4 mm for adults and 2.5 mm for children, are disposable, so your monthly need equals the number of ear examinations. For the examination couch, the differences between paper and non-woven couch roll, widths and perforation are explained in the guide to disposable couch roll, and choosing gloves in the guide to examination gloves.
Injections, infusions and dressings
Order syringes in the volumes you actually use: the catalog has them from 2 to 60 ml, with or without a needle. The needle color code and the difference between Luer Slip and Luer Lock syringes are in the guide to syringes and needles, and IV cannula sizes in the guide to IV cannulas. The 70% isopropyl alcohol swabs are sterile and individually wrapped. For dressings, see the guides to swabs and to medical tape and plasters.
Sample collection
Tubes, holder and needles have to work together: the holder in the catalog has a Luer Lock connector and is disposable, and the 21G blood collection needles are 38 mm long. The coagulation tube has a blue stopper and 3.8% sodium citrate, the biochemistry tube has a yellow stopper, a clot activator and a separator gel, and the hematology tube has a violet stopper and K3 EDTA. Colors, additives and the order of draw are explained in the guide to blood collection tubes. The urine culture and stool containers are sterile, single-use and individually wrapped, and the throat swabs come with Amies transport medium.

Hygiene, disinfection and waste
What the rules say, in short
- High-level disinfection cannot replace sterilization, and critical instruments are sterilized (the technical norms approved by Romanian Ministry of Health Order 1761/2021). The stainless steel vaginal speculum and stainless steel kidney dishes are reusable and autoclavable; for reprocessing them, see the guide to sterilization.
- In healthcare units, dry-heat sterilization in a dry-heat oven is allowed only in microbiology laboratories.
- Yellow marks hazardous medical waste, and infectious sharps are collected in yellow containers made of rigid plastic resistant to mechanical action (Romanian Order 1226/2012, art. 14 and art. 17).
- Infectious waste may stay in the unit for no more than 48 hours, or no more than 7 days in a refrigerated space below 4 °C (art. 34). Containers, labeling and storage are covered in the guide to medical waste in the practice.
For surfaces, the catalog has Bionet A15, a disinfectant concentrate without glutaraldehyde or formaldehyde, applied by wiping, spraying or fogging, and sprays for rapid disinfection. What you disinfect between two patients and how often is in the surface disinfection guide, and the difference between a disinfectant and an antiseptic in the guide Disinfectant or antiseptic?.

Frequently asked questions
What consumables do I need in a family medicine practice?
Start with eight groups: examination (tongue depressors, specula, gloves, couch roll), injections and infusions, dressings, sample collection and tests, gynecological exams, ECG, emergencies, hygiene and waste. Devices such as the blood pressure monitor or the thermometer are bought once, and consumables are restocked every month. Check the licensing requirements with the county public health directorate and the Romanian College of Physicians.
Which ear specula should I choose?
The catalog has disposable specula of 4 mm for adults and 2.5 mm for children, in bags of 100. Before ordering, check that they fit the head of your otoscope.
What is the difference between sterile and non-sterile tongue depressors?
The sterile depressors in the catalog are individually sealed and described for oral examination. The non-sterile ones, the same size (150 × 18 × 1.6 mm), are not individually wrapped and are also used as applicators. Choose according to your practice's protocol.
What do I need for blood collection?
Collection tubes that match the tests, a holder and blood collection needles from the same system, a tourniquet, alcohol swabs, gauze swabs, plasters and a yellow sharps container. Stopper colors and the order of draw are explained in the guide to blood collection tubes.
How long can I keep infectious waste in the practice?
The norms approved by Romanian Order 1226/2012 allow infectious waste to be stored temporarily for no more than 48 hours, or no more than 7 days in a refrigerated space below 4 °C (art. 34).
How quickly does an order of consumables arrive?
Delivery takes 1–2 working days, and orders placed by 2:00 p.m. usually ship the same day. That is why you reorder when you open the last box, not after it runs out.
